After the Majors Civic Meeting in Greenpoint, the Commissioner of Housing Shaun Donovan told the tenants from 202 Franklin St that HPD will get access to the Building and start the long awaited repairs so tenants can get back to their homes after almost 3 years.

Today, in Housing Court UNO and Community members joined the tenants from 202 Franklin Rallied in front of Brooklyn Housing Court demanding to the Judge a quick answer in their case.

202 Franklin St is located two blocks from the Greenpoint Waterfront, in the last 3 years the waterfront has become prime real estate for development of luxury housing, in the case of this building, a fire in 2003 forced the tenants out of their home, since then the owners had refused to fix the building and offered to each tenant money for buyout.
The current owner has tried to sell the property advertising it as a "vacant lot ideal for development of condos.
"Is about time the City is taking a leader roll with this building, we want our homes back but also we want to make an example of this landlord, so the rest of them know that this community is strong and united." Declared Vivian Martinez, one of the 4 families displaced by this landlord.

The Other Side of Gentrification, Senior Citizens being Displaced

Her name is Marie Tinghitella a 90 year old resident of Williamsburg.

She just received a Marshals Notice of Eviction to vacate the apartment that she called home for the past 50 years.

With the Support of UNO, Saint Nicholas and Legal Aid for the Aging she was able to vacate the eviction notice for a couple months while she can find an affordable and decent place to leave, and hopefully in the community that she call home: Williamsburg.

According to our records, at least one Senior Citizen a month is displace or is facing harassment from their landlord.
